On 11/27/17 at approximately 5:45 pm., Hot Springs Police and Hot Springs Fire Department responded to 156 Ramble Street in reference a leaf fire. Upon arrival, it was discovered several bags of leaves at 156 and 158 Ramble were on fire. HSFD extinguished the burning bags of leaves.
Less than an hour later, at 6:23 pm., HSPD and HSFD responded to a structure fire at 439 Broadway (Williams Brother’s Feeds). The warehouse was fully engulfed upon arrival. While HSFD was attempting to suppress the fire at 439 Broadway, another fire was reported at Transportation Depot (100 Broadway Terrace). An additional HSFD fire truck responded to Transportation Depot and extinguished a trashcan fire.
A witness reported seeing a teen and young adult male go inside the warehouse just prior to the fire. The witness provided a description of the teen and young adult. HSPD patrol officers located two subjects matching the witness’s description in the 400 block of Broadway.
One of the subjects was identified as Lane Brown, age 21, of Hot Springs. The second subject was identified and is a 14 year old juvenile. Both Brown and the juvenile were brought to HSPD. The juvenile’s legal guardians were contacted and also came to HSPD. Brown admitted to setting the trashcan fire at Transportation Depot. The juvenile, who was interviewed in the presence of his parents, admitted he and Brown set all three of the fires.
Lane Brown was arrested for Arson (2 counts), Unlawful Burning (1 count), and Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor. Lane Brown was booked into the Garland County Detention Center with no bond. The arson of 439 Broadway is a Class Y felony.
The 14 year old juvenile was arrested for Arson (2 counts), Unlawful Burning (1 count). The juvenile was booked into the Garland County Juvenile Detention Center with no bond.
Patti Nickels, the owner of 439 Broadway (Williams Brother’s Feeds) estimated damages to the building and contents, which were a total loss, at $350,000 to $400,000.
